The gay pride parade went right by our hotel..in fact every parade and protest march did..It seems our street was the main route to the Zocolo where the speeches took place. We watched 100,000 people march against the results of the election, and the loss of Andre's Manuel Obrador--it seemed to go on forever.
In the Gay Pride Parade there were thousands of gay men and women walking, riding the floats, throwing kisses..and thousands lined up to see them. People of all ages from grandmothers and grandfathers to young people were in the crowd. It seemed everyone was having a great time, with no discrimination at all. I've included a few photos to show some of the beauties in the parade. I know that in the small towns of Mexico hatred of gays is alive and well..so the young men and women head for the big cities..I go to Puerto Vallarta every winter..and that is where the beautiful young men go. I recently had a nice conversation with a gay editor of a very slick magazine--very social. When I mentioned the parade and how surprised I was at the straight turnout, he said that Mexico is becoming very modern in it's thinking about gays. Mexico City has a huge gay population, and many clubs of all kinds. Ten years ago or so I sat in a lovely piano bar on the Reforma listening to soft music and watching handsome older men dancing and flirting..too bad it closed--disco's just aren't the same.
